Boland Rugby is one of 14 rugby unions in South Africa affiliated to the South African Rugby Union.

With close to 20,000 registered players at club level and more than 20,000 players at school level, Boland Rugby is one of the biggest rugby unions in the country in terms of player numbers. This represents approximately 21% of the registered club players in South Africa.

The union covers a vast geographical area in the Western Cape, stretching across towns and communities including Vanrhynsdorp in the Matzikama Local Municipality, Saldanha Bay, Bredasdorp in the Cape Agulhas Local Municipality, Ceres and Worcester. Boland Rugby’s headquarters are based in Wellington at the Boland Rugby Stadium.

The Boland Rugby region includes 13 local municipalities across three district municipalities: Cape Winelands, Overberg and West Coast. According to the latest census statistics, approximately 2 million people reside within these local municipalities.

Boland Rugby has more than 200 rugby clubs, with a total of 480 teams competing each weekend from February to November every year.

The union’s professional men’s team, the Sanlam Boland Kavaliers, currently competes in the Currie Cup First Division. The women’s team, Boland Dames, competes in the SA Rugby Elite Women’s Competition. Boland Rugby also participates in all school rugby weeks, including boys’ and girls’ competitions.
