Sophia Smith is one of the most devoted and passionate supporters of Vredenburg Rugby Club (RC). Sophia or Aunt Souf as she is affectionately known is considered a super fan with her unwavering commitment making her a beloved fixture within the club’s community.
She can be seen at nearly every match come rain or shine. Aunt Souf is well-known for wearing her colourful gear complimenting her infectious energy and enthusiasm. Her knowledge of the club’s history, players, and stats is virtually unmatched, earning her the nickname “Mama Burg”.
“Sophia is the heartbeat of our supporters’ section,” said Lee Morris, Vredenburg RC Secretary. “Her positivity and dedication inspire us all. She’s the ultimate 16th player on the pitch.”
Sophia’s family connection to the club runs deep. Four of her sons have proudly donned the colours of Vredenburg. Watching her boys play sparked Aunt Souf’s love for rugby. “I never thought I’d be hooked, but seeing my sons’ passion and teamwork sparked the passion,” she said reflecting on how she started out supporting her beloved Vredenburg. “Now, well, I’m obsessed with this club. My club.”
When pulsed about her favourite Springbok, Aunt Souf said: “Cheslin Kolbe, for sure. His speed and agility are always exciting to watch. You never know what will happen when he has the ball, but you know he can make something out of nothing.”
Beyond the stands, Sophia serves on the club’s board. “Sophia brings a unique perspective to our board,” Morris affirmed. “Her love and expertise have helped shape the club’s strategic and empathetic vision.”
Sophia’s 21-year love affair with Vredenburg Rugby Club includes countless matches attended and an impressive collection of memorabilia.
“Vredenburg Rugby Club is my family. I live and breathe the team. I am truly confident in every person at this club, young, old, man, woman, player, supporter, and management.”
Sophia’s commitment to all things at Vredenburg goes beyond the club and extends toward community programs and events that attract and encourage club loyalty. Aunt Souf needs to be celebrated, for her unwavering loyalty, dedication, and commitment. She is an excellent example of the spirit that makes rugby special.
