Saron-born winger Marcqiewn Titus says it feels good to finally be back home after signing on as one of the newest members of the Sanlam Boland Cavaliers squad that is currently preparing for the start of the Carling Currie Cup Premier Division.

Titus joins the Cavas from the Griquas, whom the former Western Province Schools U18 Craven Week flyer represented during last year’s Carling Currie Cup and this season’s SA Cup campaigns.

Titus, however, says just because he donned Boland’s neighbouring team’s colours, it does not mean Cavas’ blood does not flow strongly through his veins.

“My first taste of provincial rugby was as a U12 player before I made the move to Western Province because of the high school [Brackenfell High] I attended, he explains.

“It’s very nice to be back in the Boland, at the union where I grew up and where I found my love for the game of rugby.”

He would go on to represent the University of Stellenbosch (Maties) in the FNB Varsity Cup before making a move north to join the Kimberley side.

Coming back to Boland as a complete professional player, Titus says: “I am very excited to be back here. It has been my third week here at Boland, and I must say the culture is very different and the guys are very excited about playing in the Currie Cup.

“You can see it in the way they are training; they are raring to get going. Everyone wants to prove a point and is going in hard, and that is a very good thing, as it builds a competitive culture between the guys.”

The winger whose try for WP U18 against the Lions during the 2018 edition of the Craven Week in Paarl remains one of the most watched highlights, as he finished off a brilliant backline attacking move. He is hoping to do more of the same when he gets his shot with the Cavas.

“The game that Boland plays is the type of rugby I like playing – running rugby, which is part of the Cavas’ DNA. I am truly thrilled to be back at home, and it is not something I take lightly.

“It has always been my dream to play for Boland at a senior level, where I get the opportunity to make the people of my hometown, Saron, proud.

“This is a great opportunity to get out there and represent them and the children who look up to me as one of their heroes. Not forgetting my family who have supported my decision to become a professional rugby player.”
