History of Boland

Boland Rugby is one of 14 Rugby Unions in South Africa which is affiliated to the South African Rugby Union. With close to 20 000 registered players at club level and another 20 000 plus at school level, Boland Rugby is by far the biggest union in terms of player numbers. 

This is 21% of the registered club players in South Africa. The union stretches over a massive geographical area in the Western Cape. This includes towns like Vanrynsdorp in Matzikama Local Municipality, Saldanha Bay, Bredasdorp in Cape Agulhus Local Municipality, Ceres, Worcester and its headquarters is based in Wellington at the Boland Rugby Stadium.

The Boland Rugby area is based in 13 Local Municipalities which is located in three District Municipalities namely Cape Winelands, Overberg and West Coast. The latest census statistics indicated that there are approximately 2 million people residing in these Local Municipalities. We have over 200 rugby clubs with a total of 480 teams playing each weekend from February to November each year.

Boland Rugby’s professional team is known as the Cavaliers that currently compete in the Currie Cup First Division. Our Women’s team known as Boland Dames compete in the SA Rugby Elite Women’s Competition. We also compete in all the school rugby weeks which includes boys and girls.
